June 2008 Newsletter
People Connection
In January. we started a new regular Newsletter Feature, "the People
Connection." Each month, we select one or two people who have
been involved in the cast and/or crew of our productions and have them
tell you about their experiences. This month, we have selected Bonny
Burke. Bonny first appeared as Martha Arable in last summer's
musical production of Charlotte's Web-The Musical. She has
also appeared in productions with several other companies in the area.

Bonny Burke as Adult Belle and the Charwoman--Bonny,
is in her second Destination Theatre Company production having been
seen in last summer's Charlotte's Web. She is also happy to
be sharing the stage again with her son, Will. Bonny has performed
in many shows over the past several years. She won a 2004 Arts For
Life Award for her role as Mrs. Edward Rochester in Curtain Call
Repertory Theatre's Jane Eyre. Other favorite shows include
The Rocky Horror Show, Follies, Caberet and
Jekyll and Hyde. Bonny thanks her family for their love,
patience and support. She also remembers "Dennis" and his passion
for theatre. He was a great influence. |
When I looked at the Arts for Life
website and saw Charlotte’s Web auditions with Destination
Theatre Company, I thought, “Great!
What a wonderful family show with a terrific inspirational
message.”
I asked my son Will, who was nine at
the time, if he would be interested in auditioning, and he responded
“yes, I want to be Wilbur!”
I explained to him that while I
appreciated his enthusiasm, the director would decide who to cast for the
various roles. So when he was
asked to play a field mouse, and a fairgoer instead, he was just as
excited, and so was I to play the part of Martha.
This was a different experience for me
as I had been in more mature themed shows over the past several years. I enjoyed the musical challenge in shows such as Jekyll &
Hyde, The Full Monty, Follies, and Sweeny Todd, performed by Curtain Call
Repertory Theatre Company, however these were not kid-friendly shows.
Even “Jane Eyre” was off limits to my children because I
happened to play “Bertha”, Edward Rochester’s psychotic wife, who
was locked in an attic and did a lot of “howling and growling.”
Justine, the ten- year- old girl in the cast playing young Jane, was
scared, and my husband said he got chills up and down his spine during the
performance! While this was
fun for me, I wanted to do a summer show with my son, and it was
Destination Theatre Company that provided that opportunity.
Destination
Theatre Company is a faith-oriented, inspirational, family friendly group
that provides a wonderful theatrical experience while promoting positive
messages to members and patrons. I
love the spiritual message that our current show, “A Christmas Carol”
sends. Not only do we pray in church and school, but now as a part of the
script, my son prays at nearly every rehearsal. This
helps to create a warm and peaceful environment allowing us to focus on
our work. Let us pray that we
are all as relaxed and focused on opening night!
