The Diary of Anne Frank
The inaugural production of Destination Theatre Company
was The Diary of Anne Frank by Francis Goodrich and Albert
Hackett. Diary... is the dramatic and heroic story of one
girl who, despite not surviving the Holocaust, has become a representative
of all of the millions of Jews who were "exterminated" by the
Nazis during the 1940s. The play begins and ends with a scene
between Mr. Otto Frank and the two "helpers," Mr. Kraler and Miep
Geis. The first scene sets up the whole play as a memory from the
eyes of Mr. Frank. However, as you see the scenes unfold and hear
the diary entries read, you realize that it is not a fictional story but the
truly heroic effort of one young girl to survive the ordeal with her
sanity in tact. Anne's incredible courage gave us the gem of the
second act, "I still believe, in spite of everything, that people
really are good at heart.

For this first production, we were given the use of the
lower chapel at West County Assembly of God in Chesterfield MO. The
small-ness of the space and the low ceiling helped give the needed
illusion of the cramped quarters occupied by the residents of the secret
annex.
