Character Sketch Questions

All questions on this form are to be answered from your character’s perspective.  Some of them are answered directly in the script; others will require some thought and/or imagination.  You may find that it will benefit you more in developing your character if you answer these questions together in one long biography.

What is your name?

How old are you?

Who are your parents?

Name any other family members.

Tell your life story in one or two paragraphs—What happened to you up to the point that the play started.

What are the contents of your pockets—We carry lots of things in our pockets that give insight into our personality.  In order to explore the character, we can decide on items found in your pockets.  We can flush out many quirks and specifics through this exploration.

What would be your theme song/music—We all have different tastes in music.  Have you ever thought about the type of music that defines, or gives a glimpse of the inner self?  Think about the types of music that defines you.  Sometimes it may help to make sure you have access to the song so you can use it prior to rehearsals and/or performances to help you get into character.

What physical attributes make you unique from the other characters in the play?

What un- or sub-conscious habits do you have?

What is your favorite food?

What is your favorite book?

Objectives are a very important part of portraying any dramatic character.  While most characters have smaller objectives that motivate individual actions, they all have a larger objective (sometimes called the “super objective”) that provides the drive behind EVERYTHING that they do in the course of the play.  Answer the following questions about your characters overall objective in the play.

What do you want to happen during the time period encompassed in the play?

What clues does the script give that this is your objective?

What tactics do you employ to achieve your objective?

What stands in your way of getting your objective?

Do you achieve your objective?  Why or why not?
